Going From the Bullied to the Bully There she is, standing there while three older girls surround her. They just keep telling her again and again that she’s ugly, weird, and a waste of space. She stands there fighting back her tears telling herself she will never be like them, she won’t cause people to feel like this, and that it will all end soon. But the next thing she knows, she is the one making fun of the little sixth grader who simply needs a friend. Why does this happen? Why do people often resort to the way others once treated them, even when they can remember how unhappy and angry it made them feel? There’s a whole list of reason that could be made: the need for power, the idea that it will impress people, the want to for once be the stronger person, and hundreds more. Does the bullying really accomplish any of these goals though? If someone was once the new employee that was yelled at everyday, why do that person eventually become the manager that screams at employees on an hourly basis? People often resort to the way others once treated them because they are incapable of finding new ways of behavior, have hope in regaining their self-esteem, or are becoming overly accustom to bullying.
